Prestressed Concrete Sheet Pile (PCSP) / Reinforced Concrete Sheet Pile (RCSP)

1. Introduction

Prestressed concrete sheet pile (PCSP) is a precast concrete structure manufactured on modern industrial production lines. Utilizing advanced prestressing technology, this type of pile offers superior load-bearing capacity and exceptional durability.

2. Structure and Advantages of Prestressed Concrete Sheet Piles

Prestressed reinforced concrete is a structural system that combines the high tensile strength of prestressing steel with the compressive strength of concrete. Notably, the structure is preloaded with reverse stress even before bearing any load, which helps minimize deformation under actual loads. As a result, the structure can carry larger loads or span longer distances compared to conventional reinforced concrete.

Key benefits:

  • Excellent durability and crack resistance

  • Lighter weight compared to traditional solutions, reducing transportation and installation costs

  • Ideal for sustainable infrastructure projects

3. Engineering Principles of Prestressed Concrete Sheet Piles

3.1 Prestressing Steel and Pre-Tensioning Technique

Prestressing steel is high-strength steel that is tensioned using specialized equipment before the concrete is cast. Once the concrete hardens, this tension is transferred to the structure, generating a stress that opposes future loading. This enables the structure to carry nearly twice the load compared to non-prestressed concrete.

During normal operation, the load-induced deformation offsets the pre-applied stress, and the structure regains its original shape as if no force was applied.

3.2 Comparison with Conventional Reinforced Concrete

In traditional reinforced concrete, steel reinforcement only resists forces when loads are applied. In contrast, prestressed concrete includes pre-existing internal stress, which limits microcracks and significantly enhances durability.

Additionally, by using high-strength steel and high-grade concrete, PCSP provides superior load capacity and crack resistance compared to traditional concrete structures.

3.3 Durability in Harsh Environments

PCSP has a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (725 kg/cm²). Its low permeability enhances resistance to sulfate and chloride attacks, making it ideal for use in coastal areas, saline environments, and acidic soils.

4. Technical Standards and Materials

4.1 Product Standards

All prestressed concrete sheet piles produced by VINA – PSMC meet high international standards:

  • JIS A 5354:1993 – Japanese Industrial Standard for prestressed concrete piles

  • JIS A 5373:2004 – Japanese standard for manufacturing and inspection of prestressed concrete piles

  • Production is monitored by QUACERT (Vietnam Certification Centre) to ensure compliance with Vietnamese quality standards

4.2 Materials Used

To maintain the highest product quality, VINA – PSMC uses internationally certified materials:

  • Cement: Portland PC 40, PCB 40 (TCVN 6260:2009 or equivalent)

  • Coarse aggregate (crushed stone): 4.75 mm – 25 mm (ASTM C33 or equivalent)

  • Fine aggregate (natural/crushed sand): 0 mm – 4.75 mm (ASTM C33 or equivalent)

  • Mixing water: Compliant with TCXDVN 302:2004

  • Prestressing cable/steel: ASTM A416 or JIS G3137

  • Non-prestressed steel reinforcement: JIS G3112 or equivalent
